- Carnegie Mellown University
- Most accounting research at GSIA is grounded in economics. In addition, students in accounting take wide range of courses in mathematics, probability and statistics, econometrics, and experimental design, that prepare them to conduct both theoretical and empirical research.

- The frameworks used in accounting research vary depending on the specific focus of the research and the orientation of the researcher, and include empirical-archival approaches (which rely primarily on historical data and statistical techniques), analytical methods (which seek to model one or more phenomena in a stylized setting), behavioral approaches (which rely primarily on psychological theories to derive testable predictions about individual and group behavior), and experimental-markets approaches (which create economic settings in controlled laboratory market environments). As part of their training, doctoral students would be exposed to research using each of these frameworks.

- Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- Accounting & Control students are expected to push beyond the boundaries of traditional accounting and incorporate a thorough knowledge of economics and finance in their work on contemporary issues in financial reporting, disclosure, and contracts using financial information. In addition to seminars in accounting and finance, students acquire the economics depth required of MIT Sloan's financial economics PhD students.

- As an academic field, accounting has experienced a substantial infusion of new concepts and quantitative technologies. These developments have aligned accounting with economics and finance more closely than ever before. Because of this, a thorough understanding of accounting requires a substantial background in mathematics, probability, statistics, economics and finance. This background is acquired through formal coursework during the first and second years.

- University of California at Los Angeles
- Courses taken during the first two years of the program provide a strong research foundation. Finance, mathematics, and probability and statistics courses required by the Accounting area can be used to fulfill the Doctoral Program's overall breadth and research course requirements. The course work helps develop the ability to understand, integrate, and conduct accounting research.

- Research in accounting considers the creation and use of planning, control, and performance information. Accounting is regarded as a system which conveys information about economic entities (e.g., managers and business units, including for-profit firms and their sub-units and non-profit entities). Studies in this area link substantive accounting issues with theory and methods from economics, finance, and cognitive psycology.(上記ページから入手できる"Ph.D.

- Entering students are expected to have completed courses in introductory finance, advanced-level financial accounting and intermediate managerial accounting in addition to the School’s required General Background and Analytical Tool courses. Beyond that, all Ph.D. students majoring in accounting are required to complete the following minimum Course Requirements: Econometrics/Statistics (3), Economics (2), Finance (2), Ph.D. Seminars in Accounting (4), Electives (2). The elective requirement is normally fulfilled from such subject areas as economics, finance, statistics or operations management.

- Because the primary emphasis of the program is on preparing graduates to contribute to accounting research, successful candidates must possess a strong aptitude for abstract thinking and quantitative analysis.
- During the first two years of the program, students take courses in economics, finance, statistics, mathematics, as well as in accounting.

- Stanford University
- The Stanford PhD Program in Accounting trains individuals to conduct research on accounting issues. Emphasis is placed on developing a conceptual framework and set of skills for addressing the general problem of evaluating accounting alternatives. While issues of financial reporting, managerial accounting, and taxation are the ultimate concern, special emphasis is given to applying basic knowledge of economics, finance, decision theory, and statistical inference to accounting issues. As a result, the PhD Program in Accounting offers broadly based, interdisciplinary training that develops the student's skills in conducting both analytical and empirical research.

SOM's program in accounting is designed to develop strong theoretical and empirical skills. The typical student will build "producer" skills (the ability to generate original research) in one-area and "consumer" skills (the ability to read and understand) in the other. These skills are developed in appropriate economics and empirical methods courses, as well as in specialized accounting seminars. For example, principal-agent relationships, game theoretic bargaining encounters, estimation in the presence of errors in variables, and field and laboratory experimentation are all techniques that receive application in the accounting program.

- The CPA Journal Online の Toward understanding academic research.

- Beaver, W. (1998). Financial Reporting: An Accounting Resolution. 3nd eds. Prentice-Hall.
- Watts, R. L. and Zimmerman, J. L. (1986). Positive Accounting Theory. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall.

- Lambert, R. A. (2001). "Contracting Theory and Accounting." Journal of Accounting and Economics (32)1-3, pp. 3-87.
- Verrecchia, R. E. (2001). "Essays on Disclosure." Journal of Accounting and Economics (32)1-3, pp. 97-180.

NEXT STEP
- Holthausen, R. W., and Watts, R. L. (2001). "The Relevance of the Value-relevance Literature for Financial Accounting Standard Setting." Journal of Accounting and Economics (31)1-3, pp. 3-75.
- Lee, C. M. C. (2001). "Market Efficiency and Accounting Research: A Discussion of `Capital Market Research in Accounting by S.P.Kothari." Journal of Accounting and Economics (31)1-3, pp. 233-253.
- Liang, P. J. (2001). "Recognition: An Information Content Perspective." Accounting Horizons 15(3), pp.223-242.
